Beads and Beading in The Americas

To accurately categorize the objects has proven to be somewhat tricky. As it is, so many "artifacts" are indeed hybrids: they may have been manufactured with materials from one place, then shipped into another region altogether, to be marketed and sold there.

Our promise to you is, that we try to place the items as best as we can. While we are doing more intensive research, you may notice that some objects will be moved into a different category. But then, that's exactly the beauty of beads: connecting societies over distance and time. Enjoy!

Please stay posted.

Until the brick-and-mortar museum is ready, you can see many of the artifacts in this virtual museum. Thousands have yet to be photographed and catalogued, and they will be added as time allows.

The Americas have a rich culture in the world of beading.

For example, the Huichol are a Mexican ethnic group with traditional "string art", where colored strings are pressed into a layer of bee's wax to create a design. This art form evolved into what many Mexico vacationers know as the beaded Huichol masks and animals, using colorful glass beads instead of threads.
